"Talk to Me" a fresh sip of blood on an already agonizing genre
Action, superhero and horror movies. All three genres currently find themselves in a kind of
awkward situation since not only the competition among the genre has increased but also the
general public has grown tired of it. The surprising amount of movies that come out of each of
these genres every year is surprising and it is even more surprising when a genuine good and
entertaining movie comes out and you can notice it by looking at its performance on the box
office or the amount of positive reviews online. Talk to Me is no stranger, especially thanks to its
directors the Philippou brothers, a couple of Australian youtubers with more than 6 million
subscribers on their channel RackaRacka.
Talk to Me is not a perfect movie, but is a sip of fresh blood. It's simple premise yet proposing,
serves as an innovative way to look at the subgenre of mortal games, on the movie we follow
Mia, our protagonist whose mother had died 2 years ago and on the anniversary of her dead she
attends to a party in company of her best friend and her brother to a party in which the main
attraction is a Hand that allows you to talk to the dead. As I said before the premise is a simple
one, but the execution is really what elevates the whole experience to a complete other level,
there is a clear direction in style and good performances from all the cast members, but not only
that, the script in terms of character building is well crafted, since not only the teenager
characters are interesting and well written but unlike many other horror films they lack that
annoying factor that for such a long time seemed to be the norm on these kind of productions.
But as stated there are some problems that could interfere with the experience of a few, during a
section in the middle of the movie the story seems to have forgotten the main twist of the movie
and the characters seem to divagate, if not for the excellent pace of the movie it could be its
biggest and more fatal flaw.
Its capacity to innovate and provide a good entertaining value makes Talk to Me a surprise,
worthy enough to be compared to horror mega productions despite its low budget. A 8/10 worth
of checking out.
